parents day

Written by artist Niall on 26 April 2005

we had our open day last wednesday , parents, teachers and the children from the other classes all visited and were given guided tours by the pupils from our classes, they were also photographed and interviewed by the children, they had previously made invitations and posters and distributed them round the town,so everyone including the local gard turned up. i think they all enjoyed themselves ,and it was a good way to round up the school contact hours, looking firward to the responce now but ill miss the kids, they did put me in a good mood.

we did some pattern making ,yesterday, the children designed some costumes ,we made some simple patterns and then cut them out of material and stapled the cut-outs togeather, some cutting-edge fashion ensued, they decorated the clothes using markers and colour. They enjoyed making something that could be worn, had a good laugh discussing the clothing at the end. All was documented. On-going work on our out-door structures between the showers.

This project started on the 22nd of march, introducing the idea of patterns ,explaining how clothes are made up of all these different shapes, the children are mesuring each to make templates for patterns, a potential piece of clothing that they will make, we are continuing to use the still camera and movie camera, doing some interviews ,using a tri-pod, we're continuing to work on the structures in the playground, more children working on each one, decorating them ,making dens.Thinking of making a couple of suites of clothes, using the patterns, and decorating them, will keep you posted.

as a result of the work on the looms, the childeren had expressed an interest in making musical instruments , these instruments then developed into structures using the skills we had learned, using the outside space, difficulties in keeping the structure stable and upright but with the use of copious amounts of duck tape, a degree of stability was achieved. It was good to get outside ,and involved with something that I'm interested in.Spending time in the hazel wood cutting wood and using the hazel to make simple structures, next thing is to make some charcoal in the woods and bringing the children to see the results

colour weave

the image comes as a result of an introductory film, shot at the linen museum, the children are reacting to the talk we had in relation to the manifacture of linen, concentrating on the weaving. The first two days were challenging we started with introductory slide show and the film on the weaving using drawing to record and remember information, the following day we concentrated on the weave through colour exercises and weaving real materalls ie rushes to make briget's crosses .difficulties encountered included managing 26 children while trying to teach them new skills ,everyone wants to use the camera,if the exercise is not understood concentration wanes and there is disruption, trying to find a vain which covers the theme, interests the children, and allows me to be creative in more than just a superfical way.
